For the discerning private yacht owners a luxury exploration / expedition super yacht may be the perfect answer. While it is of course possible to design and build a new yacht it is becoming increasingly popular to convert former commercial vessels. While not all commercial vessels lend themselves to conversion there is a large number of military patrol, research, fishing and deep-sea towing vessels that are available for this purpose.
While it is generally speaking cheaper and quicker to convert rather than build, commercial vessels by their very nature offer extremely robust sea going capabilities (some are ice classed), spacious accommodation, and long ranges which enable them to safely explore all corners of the planet from the Arctic in the north to the Galapagos and Amazon in the Tropics. In order to utilize them to their full potential many exploration yachts can be fitted with class approved offshore heli-decks, tender and sports fishing boats and even personal submersible crafts. The possibilities are endless.
A converted commercial vessel can also be the perfect solution as Mega Yacht mother ships and NGO research platforms.
At Shaw Ship Management we use our experience and knowledge to manage every aspect of the project. By having extensive discussions with the client we are able to build up a full mission statement as to what is required and what is expected. This will vary greatly according to the vessels intended use. This statement will then assist us to begin sourcing the perfect vessel.
A number of vessels will be shortlisted to the client, all of which will have been surveyed by us. We prefer vessels that are for sale but are still actively in service and in class, but to give the client complete peace of mind his final choice will also be independently surveyed by one on the major classification organisations. Almost immediately we also begin discussions with suitably experienced naval architects, interior designers and shipyards.
Along with maritime lawyers we guide the client through the legalities of purchasing his vessel and entering into an agreement with the preferred shipyard. After the sale has been completed we arrange delivery of the vessel to the yard either under its own power, under tow or by heavy lift vessel, and then oversee every aspect of the conversion through to classification, flag state registration, sea trials, crewing and final handover.
Our expertise comes in making sure every aspect of the conversion falls into place whilst always protecting the client’s best interests.
